Sunday, July 9th, 1876

This morning the posse discover that Silent Elk has brought them more rabbit for breakfast. Straw makes more sausage. The posse break camp and set off. The day's journey is uneventful and the posse begin to wonder if they are going towards the red rocks. Silent Elk assures the posse that they are just a day away and that tomorrow they should be at the site. Tara and Straw both notice that this is the same story they heard from Silent Elk yesterday.

The posse set up camp in a narrow valley. The night is pierced again by the call of coyotes and again, the howl is cut off mid throat. Tara notices the silhouette of a man against the moon. She guesses that the glowing red dots that she sees are a pair of cigarettes that the man must be smoking. The night temperature has dropped to almost freezing. Reg notices that Silent Elk's sleeping blanket has been stuffed with grass to give the impression that he is sleeping under the blankets.
