Monday, July 10th, 1876

The posse wake up to a dozen coyote carcasses strewn around the camp.  Reg asks Silent Elk where he was all night and Silent Elk tells him that he was hunting.  The posse break camp in a strange sort of quiet.

The posse journey through the day and dropping temperatures.  At one point during the day the posse cross through a high mountain pass and encounter a lone man.  Harsh words are exchanged and an uneasy truce is forged.  It seems that the man is a priest of some sort.  The group of settlers that he was traveling with were ambushed and in the confusion people fled in several different directions.  The preacher was unable to rejoin his group of settlers and has been wandering the Rockies for the last few days.

The posse settle down for the night in a clearing of high mountain grass.  The clearing is surrounded on three sides by a thick pine forest.  The forth side is boarded by a swiftly moving stream.  On the other side of the stream the forest rises steeply up the slope of the mountains.  The fat yellow light of the full moon is quickly extinguished by the arrival of low hanging clouds.  The air smells of moisture and cold. 

On watch Tara listens to the chilling story that Silent Elk tells about how his tribe was wiped out by white men.  How he traded away his spirit so that he could wreak vengeance on the white man for what was done to his tribe.  He then vanishes into the forest.

Later that night the posse is attacked by a huge werewolf.  The preacher panics and runs across the clearing looking for help.  The posse stand and fight the werewolf.  Reg takes a rough hit from the beast in the opening rounds of the attack and he is laid out unconscious.  Straw, JC and Tara fight hard and eventually bring the great beast down.  JC tends to Reg's injuries.  The rest of the posse start to examine the beast and watch in horror and shock as it changes back into the body of Silent Elk.

The posse realize that they are trapped in the mountains, they don't know exactly where they and they have no guide.
