The morning dawns bright and clear.  Everyone climbs out of their tents and greats Russell.  Russell introduces the posse to their guide, Blind S. Luck.  Russell explains that there is a large prairie tick colony half a days ride south of Red Rocks.  The posse are to bring back the queen prairie tick.  If they can manage that, then they can join the gang.

The posse head south.  The prairie tick colony starts as a speck on the horizon and grows to a mound twenty feet high.  The posse stop a mile north of the colony.  Straw recommends that Ezekiel and Tara head on and he will cover them with his rifle.  Blind S. Luck is there just to observe and bring any survivors back to the camp.  Tara and Ezekiel head towards the colony.  When they close to 100 feet of the colony hill, it erupts with prairie ticks.  Tara and Ezekiel are soon surrounded and fighting for their lives.  The prairie ticks try to attack by jumping onto their victim's face and pry open their lips.  Then they worm their way down the victim's throat and drain their blood.  Straw discovers that he is too far away to offer cover fire.  Ezekiel and Tara soon become infected with a prairie tick.  The ticks, sensing that the intruders have been neutralized, stop attacking.  Ezekiel, practical preacher that he is, marches over to the mound and starts digging. After an hour he unearths the queen prairie tick, stuffs her into a bag and returns to the horses.  Tara and Ezekiel, weak with blood loss rush their horses back to the camp.

The posse arrive back at the gang camp.  Tara's horse collapses from exhaustion.  Straw displays the bag to Russell.  Russell is satisfied and calls for the shaman to come help Tara and Ezekiel.  The shaman takes one look at each, and brings Ezekiel and Tara back to his tent.  Both posse members choke down some caster oil.  The prairie ticks can't stand the liquid and start climbing back out their victim's throats.  The damage caused by this causes Tara and Ezekiel to pass out.
