The morning dawns bright and clear. The train to Manitou Springs leaves promptly at 9:00am. Everyone manages to get their things on board and get seated when the trains starts moving. It will take the better part of the day to get to Manitou Springs. The train is one of the newer models that the Denver Rio Grande owns, but it is not a ghost rock boiler. The posse take note of the Steel Dragon boiler and matching cars on the train crouched nearby, the boiler idling in the morning sun.
The trip passes with few interruptions. Reg tries to get Argent to play cards during the trip. Reg finds Argent to be an unwilling player and after the first hour he abandon's the attempt. Liz and Reg swap stories about the previous evening, both sharing different dreams that they had.
The posse take little note of the undistinguished passengers that move by their compartment during the day. It's late in the afternoon when the train pulls into the station at Manitou Springs.
The posse de-train and look around at The Denver Rio Grande Station. After studying the map for a few minutes, it's decided to go check in with the Sheriff's Office and then check into their hotel. The sheriff is Frank Flint, a portly fellow. He happily greats the posse and gives them the standard briefing about Manitou Springs. He describes the gruesome murder scenes for the posse and speculates that the killings have increased since the railway project started, but there were other murders before the crews started passing through Manitou Springs. The sheriff is grateful for the help that the posse can provide. He's pretty confident that between the Texas Ranger, The Pinkertons, The Army, several other undisclosed parties and the Posse, that the whole mystery should be resolved soon.
The posse's next stop is The Manitou House, Manitou Springs' first and only hotel. They are checked into their rooms by Annie Star, the owner and proprietor of the hotel. Kansas gets room 13. Reg gets room 13, on a different floor. Lizzy gets room 13 on the 4th floor. Argent, after slighting the bellhop also gets room 13, on the 3rd floor. Everyone is shown to their rooms. Argent enters a discussion about gratuities with his bellboy. The bellboy leaves Argent with the distinct impression that he has been under compensated for his services. After a few minutes the posse meet in lobby and make their way to the Hot Springs Spa. After finding some of the pools, the posse split up to cause more grief.
Kansas takes a seat in one of the smaller pools and starts washing out his clothing. Argent leaves his clothing and notices that it gets replaced with a fluffy white towel. Curious, Argent spots the attendant with his clothing heading into the spa facility. Argent follows.
Reg leaves his clothing except his swim trunks and starts towards the high dive platform. Lizzy catches sight of a mess of animal scars on Reg's torso as he wanders off. Liz reclines in one of the pools and watches as Reg climbs to the top of the 30 foot platform, waivers and gets pushed off the platform by a kid. Reg survives the "dive" and returns to the ladder.
Argent finds that his clothing is being washed, mended and folded for him. "Kansas isn't gonna like this..." thinks Argent as he spots Kansas' shirt moving through the process. Chuckling to himself, Argent returns to the pool. Kansas is hard at work washing his clothing in one of the hot springs. As he sets an article out to dry, it's quietly snatched up by the spa cleaning crew and rushed into the laundry building.
Reg starts to get into an argument with a well built local. After a brief scuffle, they both head up the ladder to the high dive. Liz, noticing the scuffle, realizes that Reg was arguing with Zalmon Simmons, just the person that she was looking for. Liz watches the high dive competition that Reg has gotten himself into. Reg's final dive of the day is a belly flop from 30 feet. After that dive, he retires to his room at The Manitou House to recover.
Liz saunters over to Zalmon Simmons and strikes up a conversation. After a little bit of verbal sparring, she is invited to tour the Pike's Peak Cog Railway Project. Liz accepts the offer and promises to show up tomorrow.
After a relaxing afternoon, the posse wind up the day at the hot springs and return to The Manitou House and retire for the evening.
