Friday, July 7th, 1876

The next morning the posse enjoy a great breakfast. Reading the paper, Straw notices that there was another “Jack the Ripper” murder and that 4 blocks of Denver burned because of a fire that night. The paper notes that Elizabeths’ was spared. Straw turns to the comics.

The posse return to Elizabeths’ later that morning. They find that in the back the grass and vegetation are blown flat indicating a huge wind started right behind Elizabeths’ and that wind blew from the bar towards the fire keeping the fire away. Straw also finds a large piece of a claw and shows the rest of the Posse. Inside Elizabeths’ the posse finds Reg holding a cold cloth to his head. Reg explains that as the rest of the posse was leaving, he got struck by a piece of flaming wood that blew off of the barn. It hit him in the head and that's the last thing that Reg remembers. He woke up in one of the beds upstairs.

Liz, the owner of Elizabeths' comes over. Liz tells the posse about the problems she has been having with a local gang of bandits. They paint themselves in grey and black ash before they go raiding. These varmints have been hitting the edge of Denver and are generally bad for business. Liz keeps making eye contact and suggestive gestures towards Tara Rize. "I think she's flirtin' with you!" comments Straw. The posse discuss the bounty. Liz indicates that the gang is hiding out in a formation of red rocks outside of Denver. She indicates that it would be a bad idea to go straight there and instead suggests circling around through the mountains to take them by surprise. Straw asks if there is a guide that she can suggest. Liz gives them the name of an Indian scout, Silent Elk. She indicates that he is probably in the bar just down the street.

The posse mount up and head down the street. The bar that Liz was referring to is called "The Last K-Bar" and features a crude drawing of a man holding his knife triumphantly above his head. It's almost pitch black inside the bar. Most of the light is cast from the street through the front door. Straw and Tara enter through the front door and saunter up to the bar. The bartender takes one look at Tara and Straw and asks what they would like. Tara asks for information about Silent Elk. Straw asks for whisky. The bartender points towards the darkest corner of the bar and mentions that Silent Elk might be there. He takes one look at Straw and then reaches under the bar for his special whisky. It's the kind of whisky that you might make if you were out on a military campaign and couldn't find a bar. So you would make your own out of whatever you could find. You would brew it really really strong. The bartender pours a shot for Straw. Straw takes a drink and braces for the mule kick that he knows follows a shot like that. After a few moments, the room snaps from duplicate images to the one sharp picture of the world that Straw is familiar with. He heads over to Tara.

Tara is putting the finishing touches on a deal with Silent Elk. One dollar a day to guide them around to the back of Red Rocks for an attack on the gang there. Silent Elk agrees. They promptly leave the bar and head outside. Silent Elk whistles for his horse. The posse stop to get gear and supplies and head out into the Colorado wilderness.

They spend the night out on the plains near the entrance to a canyon into The Rockies. JC proves to be very reliable on watch. Tara Rize notices a rabbit get taken by a coyote in the darkness. Tara also loses a large pile of imaginary money to Reg during his watch while playing poker.
